Caryl Hetland

Caryl L. Hetland, 88, Minot, formerly of Deering, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014, in a Minot nursing home.

Caryl Louise Jacobson was born on Jan. 22, 1926, in Fairview, Mont., the daughter of Almer and Bessie (George) Jacobson. She was raised on the family farm in Cartwright until her family moved to Minot, where she graduated from Minot High School. Following her graduation, Caryl moved to Minneapolis, Minn., where she worked as a telephone operator.

On June 24, 1947, Caryl was united in marriage to Milton Hetland in Minneapolis. Following their marriage they made their home in several locations throughout the United States as Milton was a Union Pipe Fitter. Eventually, the family moved to the Hetland family farm near Deering, where they raised their family. Together they purchased land and built a house, where they remained as Milton would say on the “Poor Farm” until 2009, when they moved into Minot. In August of 2013, they moved to Edgewood Vista.

Caryl was a very talented and artistic person with an extensive range of interests. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, working outdoors, and horses. When her three sons left home, she had more time to perfect her artistic abilities, including paintings, ceramics and decorating wedding cakes. She owned and operated Caryl’s Ceramics for several years. Caryl and Milton also traveled extensively throughout the world, including locations such as South America, China, Australia, Norway, Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska and Fiji. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed.

Caryl is survived by: husband of 67 years, Milton, Minot; three sons, Dr. Bruce (Peggy) Hetland, Bismarck, Brian Hetland, Norwich, and Wayne Hetland, Great Falls, Mont.; five grandsons, Eric Hetland, Andy (Melissa) Hetland, Scott (Angela) Hetland, Nick Hetland and Austin Hetland; three granddaughters, Brenda (Jim) Dinan, Teresa (Lonnie Jaeger) Hetland and Caryl Hetland; 12 great-grandchildren, Brett, Annalise, Nathaniel, Harper, Myles, Reid, Ethan, Bergan, Addysen, Hayden, William and Aliesha.
