Selma Fylling

Sept. 26, 1932-Nov. 13, 2014

Selma Fylling, 82, of Turtle Lake, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014, in the Turtle Lake Community Memorial Hospital.

Selma (Knodel) Fylling was born Sept. 26, 1932, near Drake, on her grandparents’ farm, to Christian and Anna Knodel. She grew up south of Ruso and attended several rural schools near her family’s farm.

Selma married Albert Fylling on Feb. 2, 1951, in Turtle Lake. They lived, farmed and raised their eight children on the Fylling family homestead 11 miles south of Ruso until 2002 when they moved to Turtle Lake. Albert passed away in February 2008 after 57 years of marriage.

Selma was an active member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and served in many capacities over the years, including church treasurer, Sunday school superintendent and teacher. She also held offices and was a youth leader for the Farmers Union-Ruso local for several years. Her talents were many and she shared them freely, especially when it came to supporting her beloved church.

Selma cherished spending time with her family and above all enjoyed seeing and hearing about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Even after battling cancer for the past 15 months she left this world the way she lived her life, with a smile and a sense of humor.

She is survived by: four sons, Rodney Fylling (Mindee Thuney), Ruso, Bryon (Laura) Fylling, Turtle Lake, Arlin (Annie) Fylling, McClusky, and Steven (Brenda) Fylling, Ruso; four daughters, Kathie O’Day, Moorhead, Minn., Sandra Schneider, Dayton, Minn., Claudia (Andrew) Zink, Garrison, and Naomi (John) Thompson, Wilton; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth Nathan, Turtle Lake.

Those preceding her in death were: her parents; husband; one granddaughter; two brothers (one in infancy); and four sisters (one in infancy).

Funeral services will be held: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Turtle Lake. Officiating will be Pastor Randy Emgarten.

Interment will be: in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be: from 5 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service, Sunday at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service Monday in the church.
