Ina McDonald

Ina McDonald, 97, Hillsboro, formerly of Minot, died Friday, May 23, 2014, her birthday, in a Hillsboro assisted living facility.

Ina L. Medalen was born May 23, 1917, a daughter of Tilford and Julia (Eliason) Medalen at home in Glenburn. She was raised and educated in Deering, graduating in 1935. She furthered her education by attending Minot State College.

On June 29, 1942, Ina was united in marriage to Leo M. McDonald in Mohall. They made their home in Grilley Township, near Deering where they farmed, retiring in 1979, but still keeping farming interests. They moved to Minot. Leo died Jan. 26, 1991. Ina continued to live in Minot.

When the children were young, Ina sold Tupperware for several years. She enjoyed sewing and was very creative in redoing clothing and hats, making something new. Ina was known for her love of flowers, hats, shoes and purses. She was very good at putting together an outfit and was always classy. Ina was an artist and painter. She painted a very wide variety of subjects, especially flowers and landscapes.

Ina was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. She enjoyed playing card games, including whist, pinochle, bridge and dominos. For many years, she and Leo were active with a dart league and made many friends. They also enjoyed dancing. She played until the age of 90. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Norsk Hostfest.

Ina is survived by: children, Michael (Judy) McDonald, Savage, Minn., Connie (Jerry) Renner, Dalton, Minn., Susan (Doug) Abentroth, Hillsboro, Jean (Alan) Berdini, Minot, Marianne (John) Shrode, Osakis, Minn.; 24 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; sister, June Barrett, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ina was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo; and sisters Amy Allen and Margie Hansen.

Visitation: Wednesday, May 28, 2014, from 2 to 7 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Funeral Service: Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 10:30 a.m., at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. In Ina’s memory, guests are invited to please wear a hat to the funeral service. Burial: Thursday, May 29, 2014, at 1:30 p.m., at St. Olaf Lutheran Cemetery, Deering.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to an organization of donor’s choice.
