Roger Lunde

MOHALL Roger Odell Lunde, 83, Mohall, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, at a Minot hospital.

He was born Aug. 3, 1930, on the family farm near Brinsmade, to Roy and Olga (Kinneberg) Lunde. At the age of 9, his mother passed away; at the age of 13, he moved to Mohall to work for area farmers and relatives. Liking Mohall so well, he chose to stay and attended school and graduated from Mohall High School in 1948. He attended the North Dakota Agricultural School (NDSU) in Fargo for one year. Roger returned to Mohall and worked at Farmers Union.

In August of 1951, he and Winston Allen enlisted in the U.S. Navy to be together. It was a longtime joke between them as they didn’t see each other until being discharged. He served as a gunner’s mate during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1955 with several medals and honors.

Roger returned to Mohall and returned to work at Farmers Union and was named manager in 1957. Roger and Joyce Vehslage were married Dec. 15, 1957, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mohall. He began serving as the Mohall Postmaster in 1967, retiring in 1992. He also farmed his in-laws’ land for many years.

Roger was a member and past Adjutant and Commander of the George T. Taylor American Legion Post #52, in Mohall, and served on the Board of Control for 32 years. He was awarded a lifetime membership in the Legion Post. He was very active in the community. He was a lifetime member of the Mohall Fire Department, a member and past treasurer of Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall, a member of the Mohall Masons, a past member of the Elks Lodge, former emergency medical technician for the Mohall Ambulance Service, a past member of the Mohall Industrial Development Corp., served on the Mohall Park Board, was a member of the Sons of Norway, a past member of the Mohall Jaycees and the North Dakota Pottery Association.

Roger enjoyed antique and coin collecting, and especially collecting pottery. He was an avid reader, loved gardening and never turned down a trip to the casino. His family was the most important thing to him. He loved following his children’s and grandchildren’s activities.

Family: wife of 55 years, Joyce Lunde, Mohall; daughters, Michelle (Wade) Billadeau, Raub; Mona (Bradley) Dendinger, Hillsboro, Ore.; and Jennifer (Dan) Brossart, Rugby; grandchildren, Jarred, Layne and Shay Lee Billadeau, Raub; Meghan, Maria and Olivia Dendinger, Hillsboro, Ore.; and Jackson and Sawyer Brossart, Rugby; sister, Norma (Bruce) Kinnear, Winnipeg, Man.; sister-in-law, Janis Lunde, Brinsmade; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Olga Lunde; brother, Curtis Lunde; sister, Mavis Lunde; mother- and father-in-law, Harmon and Hazel Vehslage; and stepmother, Sally Lunde.

Funeral: Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall.

Burial: Mohall Community Cemetery, Mohall.

Sharing of Memories service: Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, at 7 p.m., at Brose Funeral Home, Mohall.

Visitation: Thursday, 2 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
