As Homecoming Week arrives at Minot State University, the campus transforms into a lively hub of activities and celebrations. Students and alumni alike come together to participate in a range of events that highlight the spirit and tradition of MSU. From engaging games and spirited sports events to meaningful alumni gatherings and the very popular parade and tailgate, Homecoming is a special time that brings the MSU community closer.

But what does Homecoming truly mean to the student body?

Excitement for students comes from taking breaks after classes but enjoying the various activities held by MSU Life events bringing students together so they can have free food and tons of exciting free prizes. One of the week’s many highlights is the “500 Ways to Win” event, where students can participate and win exciting prizes. This event serves as a thrilling diversion from academic pressures and encourages unity and friendly competition among students.

Other than exciting activities, students, teachers and alumni get the chance to watch their friends, sons, or daughters play in the football game or the volleyball game. These events are particularly popular among students, offering a chance to unwind and bond with friends while celebrating their university’s athletic culture. It’s not just the action on the field but the enthusiasm of the crowd when it all comes together, the atmosphere is a once-in-a-lifetime feeling.

The most iconic elements of Homecoming at MSU are the parade and the tailgate. The Homecoming Parade is a festive and colorful procession that winds through the campus, featuring floats, marching bands, and various student organizations. It’s a vibrant display of school spirit and creativity. Following the parade, the tailgate party is a highly anticipated event that kicks off the football game in style, where students, and alumni come together to enjoy food, music, and games before the big game. It’s a chance for everyone to socialize, celebrate, and gear up for the high-energy atmosphere of the football stadium. It’s a unique part of American culture you would never be able to experience it anywhere in the world.

Several students at MSU shared their thoughts and experiences, offering unique perspectives on what Homecoming truly means to the student body. “Homecoming week is so exciting! It brings out amazing, positive, and fun vibes on campus but also the community. For me, as an international student homecoming is a time where I am stepping into something new and live a special tradition of American culture” said Alexa Sakar RHD of McCulloch Hall. “Since I am in the cheer team, we are always in the parade. We walk on the parade to the tailgate and get ready for the football game! It’s fun to be surrounded by my team and the great spirit of the community.” For many students being with friends and enjoying free food and music is what they have been waiting for.

“I am so excited for homecoming week. There will be an outrageous number of free items, free food, and tons of games! Homecoming is one of the best events Minot State has to offer. Homecoming for me, is family and friends coming together to celebrate a tradition, a tradition of returning home, reconnecting, and reminding everyone how strong of a community we are together”, said Payton Wayman a member of the Minot State University wrestling team. “For homecoming week, it’s fascinating to watch how people gather up to celebrate with each other. The games are fun, the school’s spirit gets lifted and there is a lot of excitement from students for the upcoming events throughout the week. Like other students, I’m excited about it and see how this year’s homecoming is going to be”, said Xhuljano Shehaj.

As these students expressed, Homecoming at MSU is a time to come together, celebrate, and build excitement. Homecoming is a time for students to connect with their peers and the larger university community. For many, it’s an opportunity to experience the tradition for the first time, and for some it would be their last year. It is more than just a series of events and athletic games, it’s the heart of any college experience Ultimately, Homecoming reflects the MSU tradition that has been going on for decades and will continue for decades to come.
