Bison score seven in the ninth to beat Omaha

Down to the final strike in the game, the North Dakota State baseball team scored seven runs in the ninth inning Sunday to beat Omaha 10-4 in the series finale. The victory earned the Bison a split of the four-game series.

Bennett Hostetler, Zach Solano and Calen Schwabe each had a pair of hits for the Bison. Schwabe drove in three runs, while Nick Emanuel drove in a pair. All 10 Bison runs came from 10 different players.

Max Loven had a no-decision on the mound in 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out three. Parker Harm tossed two innings, allowing a run on three hits and three walks, while striking out a pair. Gabe Pilla moved to 1-1 with the win in 1.2 innings, striking out one and walking one, while allowing two hits.

Omaha opened the scoring with a home run in the first before NDSU tied the game in the third on a sacrifice fly from Jake Malec. Solo home runs from Solano in the fourth and Hostetler in the sixth gave NDSU a 3-1 lead.

The Mavericks tied the game with a two-run triple in the sixth and took the lead with a bases loaded walk in the eighth. In the ninth, Emanuel was down to his final strike before singling to right field to bring in Cade Feeney and Noah Dehne to give the Bison the lead.

After a pitching change, Schwabe sent the first pitch out of the park for his first career home run. Malec would score on a double to left center by Peter Brookshaw before Brookshaw scored on a dropped fly ball, as the Bison took a 10-4 lead. Omaha loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Solano caught a ball on the warning track with two outs to end the game.

The Bison improved to 18-8 overall and 7-5 in the Summit League, while Omaha dropped to 10-14 overall and 5-3 in the league. The game was the final scheduled road game of 26-straight to open the season, the most road games without playing a home game for any team in the country for the Bison. NDSU will host Western Illinois this weekend, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. of a doubleheader on Friday at Newman Outdoor Field.
