Companies report brine spills

BISMARCK – The North Dakota Oil and Gas Division was notified recently of brine releases in McKenzie, Mountrail and Divide counties.

A release occurred Thursday at a saltwater disposal well about eight miles south of Williston. Oasis Petroleum North America LLC reported Friday that 4,050 barrels of brine released due to a pipeline leak. At that time, 3,970 barrels of brine had already been recovered. Product was contained on-site and cleanup is underway.

The second spill occurred Thursday at a salt water disposal well about six miles southwest of New Town. Marathon Oil Co. reported Friday that 300 barrels of brine released due to valve leak. All product released had been recovered at the time of reporting. Product was contained on-site.

A valve leak occurred Saturday at a salt water disposal well about two miles southwest of Fortuna. Murex Petroleum Corp. reported Monday that 650 barrels of brine released. All product is contained on-site and 600 barrels of product have been recovered as of the time of reporting.

State inspectors have been assigned to the locations and will monitor any additional cleanup.
