Hospitalizations due to virus hit new high in North Dakota

BISMARCK (AP) — Hospitalizations due to illness from the coronavirus reached an all-time high in North Dakota with 105 people receiving treatment in medical centers, state health officials reported Monday.

The record comes a day after state officials met with leaders at two hospitals in Bismarck who told a governor’s task force they are nearing capacity because of COVID-19. Burleigh County, which includes Bismarck, leads the state with 719 active virus cases.

Three new deaths were reported, including a woman in her 60s and man in his 80s from Burleigh County and a man in his 80s from Rolette County.

North Dakota continues to lead the nation in the number of cases per capita over a two-week period, according to The COVID Tracking Project. The state confirmed 260 positive tests in 28 counties in the last day, led by Burleigh County with 69. A total of 20,983 cases have been confirmed since the pandemic began.

However, active cases in the state fell Monday by nearly 100, for a total of 3,669. Cass County, the state’s most populous county, is second in active cases with 528, followed by Stark with 416, Morton with 269, Williams with 243, Grand Forks with 226 and Ward with 212.
