Following a derailment of 19 train cars Wednesday morning, Sept. 30, in Minot, BNSF’s main track 2 reopened Wednesday night, and the main track 1 reopened Thursday morning, Oct. 1, according to a BNSF spokesman.

The incident occurred near Second Avenue Southwest when the 19 train cars derailed and four train cars were tipped to the side. There were no reported injuries to the crew, the BNSF spokesman said.

As a result of the derailment, the Sixth Street underpass and nearby streets were closed off to traffic. Nearby commercial buildings also were closed Wednesday. Clean up at the site began Wednesday morning.

An Amtrak passenger train also was delayed at the Minot passenger station due to the derailment Wednesday morning. Amtrak uses BNSF tracks.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation, the spokesman said.
