Back-to-school costs add up quickly for North Dakota families. Providing breakfast and lunch at school at no cost to families could save parents nearly $1,000 per child each year. It could also mean that every student can sit down for a healthy meal and start the school day ready to learn.
Those are among the questions North Dakotans will discuss at Prairie Action North Dakota's next virtual Amplify North Dakota session on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 10 a.m. CT. The conversation will focus on Measure 2, which would provide one breakfast and one lunch each school day at no cost to families.
"School meals touch more than one part of a child's day," said Amy Jacobson, executive director of Prairie Action North Dakota. "They affect whether a student is ready to learn, what a family has left in its budget, and how schools care for the kids who walk through their doors. Our speakers will each bring a different perspective on what Measure 2 could mean for families, and attendees will have a chance to ask questions about the ballot measure."
Speakers are Robin Nelson of Together for School Meals; Nick Archuleta of North Dakota United; Tony Burke of the American Heart Association; Cheryl Kary of Sacred Pipe Resource Center; and Ashley Gashck of the North Dakota AFL-CIO. They will discuss the measure's potential impact on students, working families, public education, health, and communities across North Dakota.
The session will include a Q&A, along with information for people who want to volunteer with the Together for School Meals campaign.
