Treatment available for kratom users

By EMMAKAY POLING 2 min read

With North Dakota’s newly imposed kratom restrictions in effect, many users are looking to quit the substance. While quitting can be difficult, there are plenty of resources in the Minot community to support those who are struggling.

Dina Goodman, licensed master addiction counselor with Goodman Addiction Services in Minot, said the past couple of years have seen an increase in individuals showing up for kratom withdrawal symptoms and loved ones seeking information. Because of kratom restrictions North Dakota recently put in place, more are seeking help quitting the substance.

Goodman's advice for users of kratom is to avoid mixing the drug with other substances, such as alcohol, pay attention to mood or physical changes and keep note of any significant new differences.

She also said to take into account the concern from family and loved ones, and that when in doubt it is best to seek medical attention.

She said "willingness to change develops over time," and greater support in the community allows for people to come forward with their addictions.

Goodman Addiction Services, which started in 2005 due to a need for addiction and recovery support at the time, provides education on substance use and offers both group therapies and individual therapy sessions. The organization works closely with medical professionals so if prescription medication is necessary, the client will be able to access it.
