Relay to honor families affected by pregnancy, infant loss

By MDN STAFF 2 min read

Next month, 12 runners will take on nearly 480 miles across North Dakota as part of The 10.15 Project, a four-day relay created to honor families who have experienced pregnancy and infant loss and raise support for those navigating grief.

The relay will take place Oct 15-18, beginning in Medora and traveling through Dickinson, Bismarck and Jamestown before finishing at The Lights in West Fargo. Along the way, runners will carry stories of loved ones lost too soon, creating opportunities for communities to come together in remembrance and support.

"This isn't about how fast we run or how many miles we will cover," said runner Dr. Michael Greenwood, co-founder of The 10.15 Project. "It's about showing up. Every mile represents a family, a story and a baby who deserves to be remembered. We're hoping this relay creates conversations, brings people together and reminds families who have experienced loss that they are not alone."

The 10.15 Project will benefit Haven, an organization that supports parents who have experienced the loss of a child.

Since 2017, Haven has worked to provide hope, healing and community for families navigating pregnancy and infant loss.

"We know grief doesn't follow a timeline, and support can make all the difference," said Jen Burgard, executive director of Haven and co-founder of The 10.15 Project. "The 10.15 Project is helping bring that message to communities across North Dakota while honoring the babies and families at the heart of this work. We are incredibly grateful for everyone who is helping us make sure families know they are seen, remembered and supported."

Funds raised through the project will support Haven's ongoing work, including expanding its Healing Gift program to families in western North Dakota, restoring healing retreats for grieving mothers and supporting a staff role dedicated to growing and sustaining care for families experiencing loss.

Community members are invited to join the relay along the route, attend local gatherings and help welcome the runners as they make their way across the state.
