NewKota honors first responders

NewKota Services & Rentals held its sixth annual lunch for the Minot Police and Fire Departments on Friday, Sept. 11, at the Minot Police Department to support and show appreciation for the work they do for the community.
“We’re here to support the police department and fire department for everything they do. It’s 9/11 and we just want to show appreciation for everything that they’ve ever done for the community and across the country,” Gerry McCoy, “The Rib King,” and local barbecue chef, said. “We want to back and support them for what they do. I feel that they’re underappreciated for what they do for the community.”
McCoy cooks different barbecue options for the first responders, including brisket and beans.
The idea for the appreciation lunch came from NewKota US Operations Manager Real Mercier, according to McCoy.
“This is our sixth year,” McCoy said. “It was actually Real’s idea. He called and talked to the chief of police and there was overwhelming response. They’re the most appreciative group of people that we’ve ever gone on and cooked for. Every year, I look forward to it.”
McCoy said the best part is getting to know the first responders they’re serving.
“Getting to communicate with them, talking with them and showing our camaraderie,” McCoy said. “They’ve gotten to know my face. We’ve got two events today, but truly this is my main event that I enjoy doing every year.”
