The 25th anniversary of a tragic event in American history will be acknowledged in Minot on Friday, Sept. 11. Remembrance events around the plane hijackings and terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon and the crash in Pennsylvania, as well as ceremonies to honor victims and first responders, will include opportunities for public participation.
Minot Family YMCA
The Minot Family YMCA is hosting a 13-mile Ruck March in remembrance of the fallen heroes of 9/11, beginning at the gym. The event is free and open to the public, and the Family YMCA encourages participants to bring their own ruck gear as they walk in memory of those who lost their lives during the incident. Check-in begins at 8 a.m., opening remarks follow at 8:45 a.m. and the march officially starts at 9 a.m., heading west on 37th Avenue Southwest.
Minot State University
Minot State is holding a virtual moment of silence as part of the National Moment of Silence through the Military Resource Center, according to Michael Linnell, director of Communications, and Andy Heitkamp, director for the Military Resource Center at Minot State. The virtual event will follow the timeline of events on 9/11 so participants can choose how they remember. The event is open to the public.
City of Minot
The Minot Police Department is holding its annual stair walk during the day in remembrance of the first responders who lost their lives after climbing the stairs of the World Trade Center towers to save others. The fire department will be joining police officers throughout the day, according to the City of Minot.
DAV Veterans
The Minot DAV chapter will host its annual Forget-Me-Not project at most Minot grocery stores on Sept. 11. The DAV will accept donations and distribute blue, artificial Forget-Me-Not flowers for people to wear in remembrance of veterans.
Mouse River Players Community Theater
The Mouse River Players Community Theatre will be performing the Tony Award winning musical “Come From Away” on Sept. 11, the show’s opening night. “Come From Away” is based on the real-life story of 7,000 airline passengers who were stranded in Gander, Newfoundland, after the U.S. airspace closed following the incidents in New York and the Pentagon earlier that day. The event is open to the public and tickets can be purchased on the theater’s website.
