FARGO - When the American Red Cross and Gate City Bank launched Quilts for Veterans in 2022, they hoped the community would donate 150 quilts. More than 200 came in. Four years later, the project has become an annual tradition.
Now in its fifth year, Quilts for Veterans is again inviting quiltmakers and community members to donate new quilts and fleece blankets for veterans across the region.
New quilts and fleece blankets may be handmade or purchased. Donations should be new or made with new materials, preferably measuring about 60 by 80 inches, feature neutral or patriotic themes, be sturdy enough for industrial washing and sterilization and have no loose yarn or strings that could catch on medical equipment.
Quilts may be dropped off at any Gate City Bank location through Nov. 11.
Donated quilts are distributed to veterans through VA hospitals, veterans homes and Stand Down events. For veterans who receive a quilt through a hospital or care facility, the gift goes home with them when they are discharged.
