The Roosevelt Park Zoo announced on Thursday, Aug. 27, the peaceful passing of Diane, a 12-year-old female warthog, due to ongoing health issues related to her age.
Warthogs typically live 7-11 years in the wild, but can live into their teens under proper human care.
Diane passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 26, surrounded by her animal care team.
Diane arrived at the Roosevelt Park Zoo in 2016. Her life at the Roosevelt Park Zoo provided opportunities for guests to learn about warthogs, wildlife conservation and the importance of caring for animals both in human care and in the wild.
Known by zoo staff for her unique personality, curiosity and charisma, she took an active interest in whatever her keepers were doing and could often be seen running around her yard enjoying a few "zoomies" before settling in to snuggle with the other members of her group on chilly mornings.
"Diane was a beloved member of our Roosevelt Park Zoo family who touched the hearts of so many people," said Dr. Logan Wood, Roosevelt Park Zoo director. "She had such a wonderful personality, and those of us who had the privilege of caring for her will always remember the special moments we shared with her. We are incredibly grateful for the 10 years Diane spent with us and for the joy she brought to our Minot community."
As Diane aged, she developed intestinal cancer, which required ongoing specialized care. Throughout her treatments, Diane demonstrated remarkable cooperation and trust in her keepers. Her willingness to participate in her care made a lasting impression on everyone who worked with her.
"Diane's wellbeing was always our top priority," Wood said. "Our keepers formed a special bond with her and worked tirelessly to make sure she was comfortable and received the care she needed. She was incredibly brave and cooperative throughout her treatments, and we are proud of the care our team provided to her. Losing an animal we have cared for so closely is never easy, and Diane will be deeply missed by the entire Roosevelt Park Zoo family."
Diane is survived by her sister, 12-year-old Vera, and half-brother, 11-year-old Tyrion, who both reside at the Roosevelt Park Zoo.
