Ward County State's Attorney candidate Christopher Nelson has announced that he has withdrawn from the contest.
His departure leaves Andrew Schultz as the only candidate seeking the position.
Although Nelson did not give a reason for withdrawing, he stated it was a difficult decision.
"This journey brought me back to what I love most about Ward County, its people. This is a special place. And I expect it always will be," he wrote in his announcement. "To everyone who gave me their time, their trust, and their encouragement, thank you. You reminded me why I love this place and the work I do as a county prosecutor. This chapter is closing, but my love for Ward County and my commitment to justice and community isn't going anywhere."
Despite his decision to withdraw, Nelson's name will be on the Nov. 3 ballot because it cannot be removed at this point.
Nelson is an assistant Ward County State's Attorney who has worked as a prosecutor for more than eight years in the county. Schultz is a U.S. Army veteran who moved to North Dakota in 2010 to practice law. He operates Worthington & Schultz, PC in Minot.
Current State's Attorney Roza Larson plans to retire from the position in January.
