The Souris Valley Animal Shelter will hold its Heroes with Paws roam and rummage event Saturday, Aug 29, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at the shelter to raise awareness of the need for adoption and foster families. Roam and rummage features free items open to the public that have been donated to the shelter over the years.
Another upcoming event is the 'Spay'ghetti and No Balls dinner and fashion show, to be held Nov. 13. The Golden Whiskers & Grateful Hearts Adoption Open House event will be held Nov 21. Some previous events this year and annually were the Wish'kers & Fur Ball: Wish Upon a Paw Gala held March 27 and the 5K Color Run/Walk/Roll + Lend-a-Paw Festival held Aug 8.
The shelter ties its events held within the shelter to events held outside of the shelter, hoping to connect fundraisers and events back to the main cause - helping the dogs and cats. The events and fundraisers also are lined up with the national calendar to celebrate days such as National Puppy Day and National Dog Day.
"Our community may first encounter Souris Valley Animal Shelter through a gala, a 5K, a dinner, a pet fashion show or even a national pet-related awareness day. We want each of those moments to lead people back to the animals themselves and to opportunities to adopt, visit the shelter and become more involved in our mission," said Haley Schoneck, Communications and Development director at the shelter.
Souris Valley Animal Shelter currently holds around 56 animals, both dogs and cats, with 12 being fostered, according to the shelter. Adoption applications filled out before Aug 29 on animals one year or older will receive $50 off the adoption fee.
