More than 150 thought leaders and policy makers will experience regenerative agriculture first-hand at the Advancing Soil Health for a Healthy America Summit on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Black Leg Ranch near McKenzie. The summit will kick off at 9 a.m.
Participants will ride through native grassland to Long Lake Creek to view a multi-partner conservation bridge and enjoy a creekside lunch of grass-fed, grass-finished bison in the open prairie. Other stops include an active grazing system and a cover crop field. The summit will conclude with a live rainfall simulator demonstration and a dinner of grass-fed, grass-finished beef. Speakers throughout the day will explore the connection between healthy soil and human health, discussing water quality, rotational grazing, biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and more. North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven and Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak are scheduled to address the summit.
Black Leg Ranch was homesteaded by the Doan family in 1882. Since then, six generations of Doans have provided care to the land and livestock. They utilize holistic management to regenerate grassland and cropland while propagating native wildlife species. Black Leg Ranch has been recognized with the North Dakota Environmental Stewardship Award, the Region 7 Environmental Stewardship Award, the National Environmental Stewardship Award, the Aldo Leopold Conservation Award and the Burleigh County Soil Health Award.
