BISMARCK - The State Historical Society of North Dakota is partnering with the University of South Dakota on a $350,000 National Endowment for the Humanities Rediscovering Our Revolutionary Tradition grant to preserve and improve access to Dakota Territory records.
The State Historical Society of North Dakota will receive an $86,899 subaward to rehouse, arrange and describe Dakota Territory records, including the records of the territorial governor, secretary, and other offices and photographs of the legislature.
The records of papers held by the State Historical Society will be digitized at the University of South Dakota.
The digitized records will be made available on the Digital Library of South Dakota for open and free public access.
"The Dakota Territory records offer a rare and important window into how our region took shape and how its early leaders interacted with the federal government," N.D. State Archivist Shane Molander said. "This partnership allows us to preserve these materials and give researchers and the public better access to the documents that tell the story of how North Dakota and South Dakota came to be."
