Governor to host mental health workshop

By MDN STAFF 2 min read

BISMARCK - In recognition of September as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, Governor Kelly Armstrong will host a workshop on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 1-2, at the Radisson Hotel in Bismarck to explore ways to improve access to mental health care, strengthen service delivery and advance prevention and early intervention efforts.

The workshop is part of Hawaii Governor Josh Green's Western Governors' Association Chair initiative, Health Beyond Healthcare, which will convene mental health experts from across the nation for several workshops in the coming year.

The Bismarck workshop will feature a conversation with Armstrong and WGA Executive Director Jack Waldorf. It will also include panel discussions on youth mental health with First Lady Kjersti Armstrong and Lieutenant Governor Michelle Strinden, as well as panels on community-based care, criminal justice deflection and diversion, behavioral health integration, the digital transformation of the mental health system and policy pathways for peer support.

"Mental health is health - a lesson I learned early from my grandmother Myrt Armstrong, who led the Mental Health Association of North Dakota for over 25 years. As the conversation about mental health has moved out of the shadows and into the mainstream, it's more important than ever to explore ways to improve services, expand access, and address the factors behind mental health challenges - especially among our youth," Armstrong said.
