AARP's "Valuing the Invaluable 2026" study estimates 82,000 North Dakota family caregivers provide 58 million hours of unpaid care each year – worth $1.27 billion annually if paid.
"Too often we don't recognize our actions as caregiving," said Josh Askvig, AARP North Dakota state director. "It can be anything from providing full-time care to an ailing spouse to smaller acts like driving your elderly parent to appointments and counting out their pills. It's what we do, but it can still be hard. AARP wants to make sure you know that you don't have to figure it all out alone."
Through August, AARP is providing a free Family Caregiving Guide with practical tools, trusted guidance and resources to help people care for their loved ones and themselves. It's available to all caregivers, and the guide includes:
– North Dakota programs, services, and local resources.
– Guidance for personal care, medical and financial decisions.
– Tips for balancing caregiving with work, family and everyday life.
