Dr. Carlos Pires, North Dakota State University soil health specialist from Fargo, performs a slake test on various soil samples at the Williston Extension Center field day on July 10. A slake test evaluates soil structure and health by immersing it in water. If the soil lacks microbial and organic matter it quickly falls apart (slakes), whereas a healthy soil will not and has good stability. The tubes, left to right, are: no-till for 37 years, grassland and conventional tillage. The conventional tillage quickly fell apart, whereas the grassland held fast. Photo by Roger Riveland.
