GARRISON - A 5-year-old Velva child lost his life in an accidental drowning at Lake Audubon on Sunday, July 26, according to the McLean County Sheriff's Office.
Grayson Olson was playing on the shore with a young sibling when he entered deeper water and became submerged. Immediate efforts by the mother and accompanying adult to recover the child were unsuccessful, the sheriff's office reported.
Upon arrival, sheriff's office personnel immediately entered the water in a rescue effort. Multiple agencies were summoned for support.
About two hours after the initial report, the victim was recovered in about 8 feet of water by dive team members of the Garrison Fire Department. He was declared deceased at the scene.
The incident occurred about 7:33 p.m. in the corner of Lake Audubon in the area of 29th Avenue Northwest, which is about 12 air miles east/southeast of Garrison.
