Public should be alert to electrical hazards
During the summer season, the public is encouraged to stay alert to electrical hazards that can exist in and around marinas, docks, launch ramps, swimming pools and hot tubs.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a nonprofit organization, although many people are unfamiliar with the risks associated with electricity in and around water, incidents involving electric shock drowning (ESD) continue to cause serious injuries and fatalities each year. ESD occurs when faulty electrical wiring or equipment on boats or piers causes an electrical current to leak into surrounding water. This energized water can then pass through a swimmer’s body causing a level of paralysis that can ultimately cause serious injury or drowning.
“Avoid swimming near marinas, docks or boatyards, and make sure your boat’s electrical systems are inspected regularly by a qualified professional to ensure that all safety measures and protection systems are functioning properly,” Lorraine Carli, NFPA vice president of Outreach and Advocacy, said.
The warmer months are also a good time to schedule inspections and maintenance for pools, spas and hot tubs. Proper upkeep helps ensure that important safety features, such as ground-fault circuit interrupters and all grounding and bonding systems, are functioning properly. Qualified electricians can periodically inspect and, if necessary, replace or upgrade the electrical devices or equipment that ensure the electrical safety of these water-based environments.
“When installing a new pool or hot tub, always rely on a licensed electrician who understands the specific electrical safety requirements for these installations,” Carli added. “Homeowners should also watch for warning signs such as flickering or malfunctioning underwater lights. By taking a few preventative steps, we can greatly reduce the risk of electrical injuries and help everyone enjoy the water safely this summer.”
