Minot Fire Department: Celebrate Independence Day safely

As Independence Day approaches, the Minot Fire Department is reminding residents that fireworks are prohibited within the city limits of Minot. Fireworks may only be discharged in areas where they are legally permitted, and anyone choosing to use them should do so responsibly.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fireworks started an estimated 34,079 fires in 2024, including 3,246 structure fires, 857 vehicle fires and more than 29,500 outside fires. These incidents caused 59 civilian injuries and an estimated $98 million in direct property damage.

In 2024, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 14,700 people for fireworksrelated injuries. Children younger than 15 years old accounted for 32% of those injuries, with injuries to the hands, fingers, head and face among the most common.

“Fireworks can be exciting, but they’re not without risk,” said Fire Marshal Anik Emery. “Celebrate responsibly by using fireworks only where they’re legal, following safety instructions and remembering that being a good neighbor means being mindful of pets, veterans and others who may be affected by the noise.”

The Minot Fire Department encourages anyone using fireworks outside city limits to follow these safety tips:

–Never allow children to ignite fireworks.

–Never point fireworks at people, vehicles or buildings.

–Keep a safe distance from bystanders and pets.

–If a firework fails to ignite, do not approach it immediately. Soak it thoroughly with water and leave it alone.

–Clean up all fireworks debris after use.

–Consider safer alternatives, such as LED light-up toys or glow sticks, especially for children and celebrations within city limits.

Residents are reminded that discharging fireworks within the city limits of Minot is a violation of city ordinance and may result in a citation and a fine of up to $150. The Minot Fire Department encourages all residents to celebrate responsibly and have a safe Independence Day.
