DAV member Richard Reuer brought back the Veterans Outreach Program to residents and their families at Trinity Homes on May 27.
Reuer said it has been five years since the program was last conducted in five assisted living facilities and Trinity Homes.
Each month at each facility a veteran or family member who has had a loved one who served will be able to share their story as part of a program titled “Moments with a Soldier.” If no one is available at the time from a facility, Reuer will seek to coordinate with a veteran in the community to share their story.
The program includes singing songs, such as “America the Beautiful” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and the folding and placing of the flag on the POW/MIA table, followed by a moment of silence. This table honors those who were lost during past and present wars and conflicts, those who were lost at sea and POW/MIAs unaccounted for, Reuer said.
The Veterans Outreach Program/Moments with a Soldier comes to veterans who are homebound or shut in, providing a chance to meet others who have served and their family members, he said.
The program schedules for the six facilities monthly are as follows: Edgewood on 10th, second Wednesdays at 2 p.m.; Maple View, second Thursdays at 3 p.m.; Edgewood on 16th, third Mondays at 3 p.m.; Minot Lodge, third Thursdays at 3 p.m.; Somerset Court, fourth Mondays at 3 p.m.; and Trinity Homes, fourth Wednesdays at 2 p.m. Each of the monthly programs is open to the public.
Reuer said Veterans Outreach Program/Moments with a Soldier carries the motto, “Find a way to serve. Be their witness for everyone plays a part to be an American worth fighting for. Live up to their legacy!”
