Flag-raising ceremony honors World War II soldier
A flag‒raising ceremony was held recently at the home of Jim Rostad, Minot, to honor the service and sacrifice of 2nd Lt. Arthur J. Blackwood, a World War II soldier killed in action and buried in an American military cemetery in France.
Blackwood, Rostad’s uncle, served across North Africa, Sicily, Italy and France during the war.
During the program, Rostad shared details of his uncle’s military service, including his rare battlefield commission from tech sergeant to second lieutenant. Blackwood was awarded the Purple Heart and the Silver Star for his actions in combat.
