Vision Zero announces awards at conference
BISMARCK – North Dakota recorded 85 traffic deaths in 2025, the lowest annual total in 29 years, according to Vision Zero, a statewide initiative dedicated to eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries.
The 2026 Vision Zero Partner Conference drew traffic safety leaders and others from across the state to Bismarck May 11-12.
“While fewer lives were lost in 2025, 85 deaths still represent 85 families forever changed,” said Karin Mongeon, Highway Safety Division Director for the North Dakota Department of Transportation. “Traffic deaths are largely preventable. As we see deaths trending higher so far in 2026, this conference is an important reminder that the choices each of us make behind the wheel matter every day.”
During the conference, partners and advocates were recognized for outstanding service and leadership in advancing traffic safety.
Law enforcement officers who have demonstrated a commitment to enforcing and promoting traffic safety laws were awarded a commemorative coin. Among those receiving coins were Officer Jayden Luck from the Minot Police Department, Officers Jeffrey Jensen and Joshua McGovern with the Watford City Police Department and Officers Garrett Norsten, Joshua Mahlum, Caleb Prout and Alexander Williams with the Williston Police Department.
Other area individuals receiving awards included Shelley Aabrekke, Lake Region District Health, who received a Child Passenger Safety Technician award, and Officer Wyatt Smith of the Minot Police Department who received an Honor Roll Award. The Honor Roll Award recognizes outstanding service to the community, information, technology, safety, public affairs and/or consumer education.
Trooper Thomas Steenstrup of North Dakota Highway Patrol was named Traffic Safety Officer of the Year.
