Roses, trees and birding will be part of the conversation at the Northwest Association of Horticulture’s annual Gardening Saturday, which also is the region’s top social event for gardeners looking to make connections.
The Northwest Association of Horticulture (NoAH) will host Gardening Saturday on Saturday, April 18, at the Minot Area Workforce Academy Building, 2100 21st Ave. NW, Minot, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The academy is located near Minot North High School.
Jennifer Kraft with the event planning committee said anyone who loves getting their hands in nature in some way will find something to suit their interests.
Speakers include Joe Bergeson, who with his wife owns and operates Bergeson Nursery near Fertile, Minnesota. He has numerous social media followers who seek out his practical advice in selecting and growing plants. His personal passion is hybridizing hardy roses for northern climates, and he will be speaking on the topic of roses and hydrangeas.
Madison Edmonds is the creator of Proof & Petals in Minot, a floral and creative brand rooted in healing, resilience and rediscovery. She will explore how gardening mirrors the healing process, drawing from her personal journey and hands-on experience to provide practical gardening wisdom alongside reflections on rest, resilience and tending what still wants to grow.

Joe Super, an instructor at Minot North, accompanied by some of his students, will speak about the relationships between land, gardens, wildlife and stewardship. Drawing from a lifetime of gardening, biology, teaching and conservation, he connects prairie restoration, backyard habitat and land ethics to show how thoughtful gardening supports birds, conserves resources and creates landscapes that give back to nature and community.
Jeff Smette will give participants an inside look at how conservation trees are grown at Towner State Nursery, exploring both bare-root and container-grown tree production. Learn how species are selected, grown and prepared for successful establishment in windbreaks, conservation plantings and landscapes across the state.
The event also will feature more than a dozen vendors, including booths displaying ornamental yard art, high-end pottery and live floral bouquets.
“The social aspect and the door prizes are a huge draw. We really put forth a lot of effort in getting great door prizes, and this year we have more than we have ever had,” Kraft said.
Comments from past participants often have mentioned how excited they were to begin their season gardening after attending a Gardening Saturday and how they met so many new friends in building social connections with fellow gardeners, she added.

NoAH was established in 1985 to assist gardeners and organizations as a community service. Its projects have included mentoring and planting activities at Habitat for Humanity homes and the Ward County Historical Society, planting activities at the Scandinavian gardens, sponsoring and planting “Memory Trees” for past members and their families, working with test garden plots at North Central Research Extension Center, helping in the city’s trail cleanup and maintaining plants at the Minot Amtrak Depot. NoAH also has established a scholarship fund at Minot State University.
The garden club meets the second Thursday of every month, usually at 6:30 p.m., in Vincent United Methodist Church.
