City water treatment plant targeted by ransomware
CHARLES CRANE/MDN The Minot Water Treatment Plant was targeted by a ransomware attack on March 14.
The City of Minot has confirmed a computer server at its water treatment plant was impacted by a ransomware event on March 14.
According to an internal document provided by the city, staff discovered a letter on the affected server, which was unplugged while IT staff worked to resolve the issue and water treatment staff conducted manual procedures for 16 hours requiring more frequent on-location gauge checks.
The water treatment plant and all city facilities related to the water system remained operational according to the document, and the water supply was safe at all times, according to the information from the city, and the event has been reviewed to identify opportunities for training exercises, improved communication and preventative system design.
The city has reported the incident to all necessary local, state and federal authorities.
