Attorney announces candidacy for District 5 Senate seat

Jeffrey Holt

Jeffery Holt, a longtime public defender and resident of Minot, announced Thursday, March 12, that he will seek election to the North Dakota Senate in District 5.

Holt’s decision to run comes after Sen. Randy Burckhard’s announcement that he will be retiring from the Legislature. District 5 Rep. Jay Fisher previously announced he will seek the Senate seat.

“With Senator Burckhard stepping down after years of service to our community, District 5 is entering an important moment of transition,” Holt said. “I believe my experience working directly with people in some of their toughest moments has prepared me to be an effective, grounded and principled advocate for our district.”

Holt said he has served as a public defender for the State of North Dakota, representing individuals across the region and gaining firsthand insight into the practical challenges facing families, veterans, working people and rural communities.

“As a public defender, I see every day how policy impacts real lives,” Holt said. “I want to bring a steady, informed and solutions-focused voice to Bismarck, one that listens to constituents and works for results.”

Holt, a Republican, emphasized priorities including strengthening public safety, supporting responsible budgeting, promoting strong local schools and ensuring government remains transparent and accountable.

“I’m committed to continuing the tradition of public service Senator Burckhard exemplified while also offering a fresh and dedicated approach to the challenges ahead,” Holt added. “I look forward to meeting voters across District 5 and earning their support.”
