Area schools compete in State Acalympics

BISMARCK — A team from Surrey High School won its division in the State Acalympics held Monday, March 23, in Bismarck.
Students from across the state competed, showcasing their knowledge and academic excellence across multiple subject areas.
The competition began with a written round, from which the top three teams in each of the three divisions advanced to lightning rounds. Surrey earned its spot in the lightning round by winning a tiebreaker against Beulah.
Competing in the Class B Large School Division, Surrey duked it out with Rugby, Park River, Beulah, Linton and Lisbon. Linton and Lisbon went to the lightning round only to be handily put down by Surrey. Lisbon finished second and Linton third.
Representing Surrey were Kanyon Trana, Matthew Wald, Lindley Markle, Hailey Tyler, Helen Barthel and Kayden Hase.
Towner-Granville-Upham (TGU) competed in the Class B Small School Division, won by Wyndmere. TGU team members were seniors Kale Deatherage and Kaylee Millar and juniors Garrison Heath, Brody Magnuson and Sam Trana. TGU had won first place in the regional event in Bottineau March 3 with Deatherage, Millar, Heath, Magnuson, senior Sage Hanson and junior Kenzie Erickson.
Wyndmere advanced to the lightning round in overcoming a three-way tie for second place with Litchville-Marion and Central Valley after the written round. Center-Stanton and Litchville-Marion took second and third, respectively, in the division. Powers Lake also competed in the division.
Bismarck High, Grand Forks Red River, Bismarck Century, Dickinson, Fargo North and Fargo South competed in the Class A division, with Fargo South, Fargo North and Dickinson qualifying for the lightning round. The championship came down to an intense tiebreaker finish between Fargo North and Fargo South. Fargo North ultimately came out on top.
