Appointed council member declines June run

Mike Hayes

Mike Hayes, who was appointed to the Minot City Council to fill a vacancy last September, has announced he will not seek a full term in the June city election.

Hayes said that while he has enjoyed his short time on the council, it is a huge time commitment.

“I have enjoyed the opportunity given to me to represent the citizens of Minot and will continue to be an advocate for the city. I feel it is time for me to spend more time with family,” he said in announcing his decision Monday.

Hayes is a Washington state native who came to North Dakota in 2011 and operated Four Seasons Construction in Minot until his retirement. Hayes brought to the council his knowledge of construction, engineering and public works. He filled the council seat of Mark Jantzer, who won an August 2025 special election to a vacancy for mayor.

Council member Paul Pitner previously announced he will not seek another term. The term of Lisa Olson also expires in June. Newcomers Kyler Collom and Joan Hawbaker are the only announced candidates at this time. The filing deadline is April 6 for the June 9 election.

Starting at $2.99/week.
