Traffic signal to go dark

Jill Schramm/MDN Traffic signals at North Broadway and 5th/6th Avenues control traffic at the intersection Friday, Feb. 6. The signals are scheduled to be turned off next week and eventually removed.

The traffic signal at the intersection of 5th/6th Avenue Northwest and North Broadway will go dark next week, the City of Minot announced.

The decision to turn off the signal came as part of the development of the 2026 Highway Safety Improvement Project (HSIP). The goal of the HSIP is to improve both vehicle and pedestrian safety within the city’s traffic signal network, according to the city. The project has four core safety components: pedestrian countdown timers and audible push buttons, flashing yellow left-turn signals and dynamic no-right turn signs.

The first step for funding approval of the HSIP was to be sure 24 signals identified among the total 49 traffic signals in the project are still warranted under current standards and traffic patterns. NDDOT found two signals did not meet the requirements for funded upgrades.

Signal removal will take place in sequence starting next week. The first step will be to place a two-way east/west stop sign. The lights then will be turned off and bagged for a 90-day evaluation period, after which city staff and the North Dakota Department of Transportation will conduct a crash review. The traffic signal would be removed in the spring.

Starting at $2.99/week.
