SWC approves Mouse River flood protection funds

BISMARCK – Souris River Joint Board was awarded $81.1 million for Mouse River flood protection for 2025-2027 by the North Dakota State Water Commission during its Feb. 12 meeting in Bismarck.

The SWC announced more than $103.7 million in funding for projects, including flood control, water supply and other water infrastructure projects across the state.

“The approval of 20 projects and more than $103.7 million in funding represents a significant step toward delivering much-needed flood protection for the citizens of Minot and the Mouse River Basin, while also ensuring long-term, reliable water resources for communities across the state,” said Reice Haase, director of the Department of Water Resources, in SWC information.

The Legislature appropriated $81.1 million for the biennium for the Mouse River Enhanced Flood Protection Project. According to previous information released by the Souris River Joint Board, about $40 million is to be provided locally from Minot’s city sales tax to advance about $120 million of work during the 2025-2027 biennium.

This $81.1 million is in addition to the $389.5 million previously approved to advance the project, according to the SWC. The project includes a combination of levees, floodwalls, pump stations, diversion channels, bridge improvements, road raises, infrastructure modifications, property acquisitions and relocations.

Among other projects approved by the SWC for funding include:

– Missouri River Intake Study, from Washburn to Montana: $860,255

– City of New Town, Sand Hill Water Tower Replacement, $3.68 million

– City of Stanley, Capital Improvements Plan Phase 3, $339,804

– Western Area Water Supply, Battleview-McGregor Rural Phase 1, $5.45 million.
