Reclamation urges caution on unstable ice

BISMARCK – The Bureau of Reclamation reminds the public that ice on rivers, lakes and reservoirs becomes increasingly unstable during periods of warmer weather.

“No ice is ever completely safe, and thawing temperatures create dangerous conditions,” said Reclamation’s Dakotas Area Office Deputy Manager Scott Hettinger. Rapid temperature changes and water currents can cause thin or weak spots that are difficult to detect.

To help prevent accidents:

– Avoid venturing onto ice unless you are certain it is safe.

– Check local ice thickness reports before any activity.

– Carry safety gear such as flotation devices and ice picks and never go alone.

– Keep children and pets away from ice-covered areas.

The public is encouraged to report emergencies to local authorities or contact the Bureau of Reclamation at 221-1242.

Starting at $2.99/week.
