Minot man sentenced for fentanyl distribution
A Minot man has been sentenced to serve a concurrent sentence of five years after pleading guilty to three separate cases including distributing fentanyl which resulted in an overdose in April 2025.
Chantz Christian Conaway, 33, entered his change of plea in the three cases in North Central District Court Friday, Feb. 13. Conaway pleaded guilty to distribution of controlled substance-resulting in death or injury, a Class A felony; criminal trespass-dwelling, a Class C felony; and refusal to halt, a Class B misdemeanor.
According to court documents, Conaway was charged in connection with an incident where a man was found unconscious inside a vehicle in southeast Minot. Officers responding were able to resuscitate the victim by administering naloxone, and the victim was transported to a Minot hospital for treatment and evaluation.
The victim identified Conaway as the source of the fentanyl that caused the overdose, and video surveillance from a nearby business recorded the transaction in a vehicle driven by Conaway. Conaway was later arrested on an unrelated warrant, and identified a man named Justin Marshall Rostad, 32, Minot, as the other individual in the vehicle who actually sold the narcotics to the victim. Rostad would plead guilty to the same Class A felony in July 2025.
Judge Gary Lee sentenced Conaway to an identical sentence he previously ordered for Rostad of 10 years with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, with credit for 107 days served. He was also ordered to complete three years of supervised probation, and was assessed $125 in court fines and fees.
For the Class C felony, Conaway was sentenced to serve 180 days of a five year sentence pending the completion of three years of supervised probation. He will receive credit for 107 days served. Conaway was ordered to have no contact with the victims and pay $125 in court fines and fees. Conaway was also assessed $175 in court fines and fees for the refusal to halt charge.
