Former Underwood legislator dies at 92

BISMARCK – Layton Freborg, 92, Bismarck, a former state legislator from Underwood, died Friday, Feb. 20.

He served two terms in the North Dakota House of Representatives, from 1973-1976 and 1979-1982, and served in the state Senate from 1985-2012. He served as chairman of the Education Committee in both houses.

Layton was a member and president of the Underwood School Board for 14 years and was involved in a number of other local organizations. He was chairman of the North Dakota Republican Party from 1985-1991.

His obituary also notes he chaired the North Dakota Senate Republican Caucus from 1985-1986; served as president of the 28 Western North Dakota Health Systems for 3 years; held a presidential appointment to the National Advisory Council of the U.S. Small Business Administration in 1990; was a delegate to Republican National Conventions in Dallas and New Orleans; and was a member of the Lignite Research Council.

Freborg operated Freborg Construction from 1961-1992 and was also in the retail lumber business in Underwood and Turtle Lake, according to his obituary.

His funeral service will be Friday, Feb. 27, at 1:30 p.m. at Parkway Funeral Service in Bismarck.
