First measles case of 2026 confirmed in Williams County

BISMARCK — The North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed one case of measles in Williams County, the first reported case in the state this year.

The individual was unvaccinated and contracted the illness while traveling out of state, according to the department. Health officials said they have identified and notified individuals who may have been exposed and that there are no public exposure locations requiring community notification.

In 2025, North Dakota recorded 36 confirmed measles cases, the first cases reported in the state since 2011.

“This case serves as a reminder to North Dakotans that measles continues to circulate worldwide and in the United States,” Molly Howell, director of the HHS Disease Control and Forensic Pathology Section, said. Howell said the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is 97% effective after two doses and that vaccinated individuals exposed to measles are unlikely to develop the disease.

Because most North Dakotans are vaccinated, the risk to the general public remains low, according to HHS.

The MMR vaccine is recommended for children at 12-15 months of age, with a second dose at 4-6 years old. Adults born before 1957 are generally presumed immune, while those born in 1957 or later should have at least one documented dose. Individuals unsure of their vaccination status are encouraged to consult their health care provider or review records through the state’s immunization registry.

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through the air and can remain in a room or on surfaces for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose and eye irritation, followed by a widespread rash. There is no specific treatment, though antibiotics may be used for secondary bacterial infections.

MMR vaccines are available through most clinics, and the federally funded Vaccines for Children program provides vaccines at no cost to eligible families.
