District 5 senator declines to seek another term

Randy Burckhard

After 16 years of service, Sen. Randy Burckhard, R-Minot, announced Tuesday, Feb. 3, that he will not seek reelection in District 5 to the North Dakota Legislature this fall. Burckhard will officially retire at the conclusion of his term on Nov. 30.

“Serving the people of District 5, the city of Minot, and the state of North Dakota in the halls of the State Capitol has been a profound privilege,” Burckhard said in his announcement. “When I first campaigned for this position in 2010, I said that my goal was to promote policies that would make our state the economic envy of the nation. I believe that by providing income and property tax relief, improving public policy and making smart long-term budgetary decisions, that goal has been achieved. I look forward to supporting the next leaders who step up to shape the future of our great state.”

Burckhard has been a member of the North Dakota Senate since 2011 and was President Pro Tempore in 2021. He is a retired executive from SRT, where he worked as a Community Relations manager and director of External Affairs. He is a member of Minot Task Force 21 and is an honorary commander for the 91st Missile Wing. He is also a civic leader ex officio for Air Force Global Strike Command.

A Minot native, Burckhard graduated from Minot State University and was elected to the Minot City Council in 2002, serving two terms.

Active in the community for many years, he currently sits on the Board of Regents Executive Committee for Minot State University and is a member of the Minot Rotary Club.

District 5 also is represented by Reps. Jay Fisher and Scott Louser.

Starting at $2.99/week.
