The Brass Band of Minot, the only British-style brass band in North Dakota, will celebrate Valentine’s Day with a pops concert with a Valentine’s twist titled “Let the Show Begin” on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 4 p.m. in Minot State University’s Ann Nicole Nelson Hall.
The concert will feature music from Broadway musicals, Neil Diamond and others, including a guest appearance by the NU Notes vocalist group.
The first portion of the concert will include “Another Op’nin’, Another Show,” a jazzy Cole Porter classic from the musical “Kiss Me, Kate,” followed by “King Cotton March,” one of John Phillips Sousa’s best marches, an arrangement of Neil Diamond tunes called “America/Love on the Rocks,” and a selection of music from the movie “Grease.”
The band will take a break while special guests, the NU Notes, sing several pieces.
The NU Notes are a singing and dancing musical group that consists of retired and active teachers who are members of DKG, a professional women educators organization. The group was founded by Sandy Starr for a performance at a DKG State Convention more than a decade ago. The members have been singing and dancing together ever since around Minot and North Dakota, in Spearfish, South Dakota, and also in Nashville, Tennessee. The NU Notes are directed by Laurel Livingston, choreographed by Paula Simonson and accompanied by DeVera Bowles.

The Brass Band of Minot is directed by Wayne Schempp and consists of brass and percussion players from Minot and other communities in northwest North Dakota who share a love of British-style brass band music. Players range from high school students to professional music educators.
