NDSU Extension recently hosted a hands-on learning opportunity for 4-H members featuring Calving School and Youth for Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) Training at the North Central Research Extension Center, south of Minot.

The event was led by Paige Brummund, Emily Burkett, Lacey Quail, Kathryn Slavick and Dr. Kelly Schaefer.

A total of 52 4-H youth from Bottineau, Burke, McLean, McHenry, Mountrail, Renville and Ward counties participated. Although cattle were used as the teaching model, the skills and knowledge shared applies to many livestock species. Youth enrolled in any livestock project were encouraged to attend.

Participants rotated through hands-on learning stations that included:

— Assisting Mabel, the model Hereford cow, as she gave birth to Marvin, the bull calf.

— Practicing calf identification, banding, injections and livestock record keeping.

— Preparing for calving season by setting up facilities, adjusting rations and building a calving kit.

— Youth for Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) Training.

Youth planning to exhibit beef, dairy, goats, poultry, rabbits, sheep or swine at the 2026 North Dakota State Fair must complete YQCA certification to be eligible to exhibit. Participants needing certification also completed required online pre- and post-tests.

The event provided youth with practical skills, increased confidence in livestock care and a deeper understanding of animal well-being and industry best practices.

Starting at $2.99/week.
