Ward County tables fireworks shows proposal
Ward County commissioners want to hear from the county’s insurer before taking action on a request for fireworks shows on county property.
The commission received a request on Tuesday, Jan., 6, from Hot Tots Baseball for use of the property where the Ward County Extension Service is located to put on five weekend fireworks shows between May and August that would be viewable at Corbett Field. Corbett Field isn’t a suitable host due to its turf, commissioners were told.
Kelly Haugan, emergency services manager, said the Minot fire chief has indicated discomfort with the proposed location. The city would need to approve the shows if the organizer is able to come up with a site and dates.
“This is really common in other places,” Commissioner Ron Merritt said of post-game fireworks. “I can’t see why we can’t find a way to make this work.”
The commission tabled the request to visit with the North Dakota Insurance Reserve Fund.
Roger Reich, executive director for Minot Commission on Aging, asked the commission to consider providing warehouse space for the organization’s nutrition program. He requested use of space in the county-owned Morgan building that will eventually be vacated by Come AlongSide Others (CASO), a community based nonprofit organization supporting foster children and families. CASO has purchased a house and is remodeling.
Reich said the space is needed to accommodate a walk-in freezer to support the meals program due to having outgrown freezer space in the Parker building, where the meals program is headquartered.
The commission directed staff to work with Reich and bring back a proposed action plan for consideration.
