Two area properties listed in national historic register

BISMARCK — A school in Harvey and a bar in Sheyenne have been listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the federal government’s list of properties it considers worthy of preservation and recognition. North Dakota nominations are coordinated by the State Historical Society of North Dakota.

According to SHSND information:

The former Harvey High School, now the B.M. Hanson Elementary School in Harvey, is significant under the categories of education and government. The building was constructed in three stages, including a 1939 addition with restrained Art Moderne styling funded by the Public Works Administration. It reflects broader trends of educational development in North Dakota during the 20th century as well as the school’s growth and relevance to the community.

The Sheyenne Bar in Sheyenne has been a primary gathering place for games, socializing and refreshments for more than 120 years. While the front was redecorated for a Western look as part of the urban renewal movement 50 years ago, the interior still has the original tin ceiling, bar, and layout.

Contrary to some misconceptions about the National Register program, listing in it does not prevent owners from altering their property, restrict the use or sale of the property, or require establishing times that the property must be open to the public. Entry into the National Register of Historic Places does give a property prestige, provides protection from adverse effects in federally assisted projects, and provides eligibility for certain preservation financial incentives.
