Minot woman sentenced on kidnapping, drug charges
A Minot woman has been sentenced to time served and probation after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including kidnapping, narcotics possession and driving under the influence.
Cyngay Emberly Merjil, 48, entered a change of plea in North Central District Court on Jan. 12 before Judge Richard Hagar, pleading guilty to one count of kidnapping-interfere with governmental or political function-child victim, a Class A felony; DUI with a minor-drugs-third offense in seven years-second with minor, a Class C felony; two counts of possession of controlled substance-methamphetamine, two counts of disobedience of a judicial order, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia-use SI, SII, SIII, all Class A misdemeanors; and one count of driving under suspension-alcohol related, a Class B misdemeanor.
According to court documents, the kidnapping charges stemmed from an incident on Aug. 6, 2024, in which Merjil took her children from a daycare without custodial rights. Merjil and the children were eventually located in northwest Minot the next day, and Merjil was arrested. The remaining charges arose from a variety of other cases in 2025.
Hagar sentenced Merjil to serve 10 years with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, with all but 272 days suspended pending her completion of three years of supervised probation. Hagar granted Merjil credit for time served for the other offenses, which were to be served concurrently with the Class A felony. Merjil was ordered to have no contact with the adult and two juvenile victims. Merjil also was ordered to complete a chemical dependency evaluation, and to pay $3,125 in court fines and fees.
