Driver charged with negligent homicide
The driver accused of striking a pedestrian in July 2025 has been charged with negligent homicide.
Jean Marie Nelson, 81, Minot, was charged in North Central District Court on Dec. 29, 2025, with one count of negligent homicide, a Class C felony.
According to court documents, on July 12, 2025, Minot Police responded to a report of a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle at 31st Avenue Southwest and 16th Street Southwest. Witnesses informed a responding officer that the victim, a 92-year-old male, was crossing 16th Street Southwest in the crosswalk when a silver 2015 Ford Edge driven by Nelson allegedly struck him.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, Nelson told the officer she was at the red light on 31st Avenue Southwest and turned left southbound on 16th Street Southwest, but did not see the man until she hit him. Nelson reportedly told the officer the victim was not in the crosswalk and her speed was around 15 mph. Nelson was cited for disregarding a pedestrian in the crosswalk, and ultimately pled guilty and paid the fine for the citation on July 24, 2025.
The victim was transported to a Minot emergency room in critical condition, and ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, investigators reviewed a number of surveillance video recordings for various nearby businesses, including footage which showed Nelson’s vehicle strike the victim without the brakes being applied until after she hit him.
Nelson is currently scheduled for an initial appearance on Monday, Feb. 9.
