Eloise Ogden/MDN Spock, Roosevelt Park Zoo’s armadillo, busies himself Saturday, Dec. 13, in the habitat he shares with Helen, a sloth, in the zoo’s Visitor Center. Spock is one of the zoo’s animal ambassadors.
The weather has been cold outside but Spock, Roosevelt Park Zoo’s southern three-banded armadillo, stays warm in the habitat he shares with Helen, a sloth, who sleeps most of the time, in the Visitors Center.
One of the Minot zoo’s popular ambassador animals, Spock typically is a solitary animal who likes to dig and shred paper. Armadillos are native to South and Central America.
Spock has been a resident of the Minot zoo since 2020, according to Chelsea Mihalick, zoo curator.
Armadillos like Spock live 15-20 years. They weigh 2-3 ½ pounds with a body length of 8-12 inches and eat insects, termites, larva and insectivore, according to zoo information. Like other armadillos, Spock can roll into a ball to protect himself when threatened.
Besides Spock, a number of other inhabitants of Roosevelt Park Zoo are animal ambassadors. Animal ambassadors are part of the zoo’s outreach program, Zoo to You, in which animal ambassadors go to schools and other organizations for presentations.

Ben and Jerry, domestic ferrets, are among the newest additions to Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot. The two also are part of the zoo’s animal ambassadors program.
