NAHL: Tauros defense continues to struggle in weekend sweep by Shamrocks
It was a nightmare end to the month of November for the Minot Minotauros.
A four-game winning streak had the Tauros generating some momentum after a slow start to the season, but those good feelings have all been erased over the past five games in which the Tauros have surrendered 36 goals.
Watertown only added to the frustration over the weekend, torching the Tauros for 15 goals in a pair of victories at Maysa Arena. The Shamrocks opened the series with a 7-4 win before matching a season-high in goals in an 8-2 rout to secure the weekend sweep. Minot has lost five straight and allowed at least seven goals in each of its last four games, including a season-high nine goals to Bismarck on Wednesday.
The Shamrocks (11-9-0) scored six unanswered goals on Friday after the Tauros struck first at 5:59 of the opening period on Philip Wiklund’s third goal of the season. It was the only lead the Tauros had all weekend, and it lasted for approximately eight minutes before Vincent Curasi tied the game.
Minot (7-12-3) surrendered four goals in the second period and another early in the third to fall behind 6-1. The Tauros made the game a bit more respectable on the scoreboard with a trio of goals in the third, scored by Ty James, Davin Nichols and Lucca Ori to get within 6-4 with 3:12 to play. But Watertown’s Justin Bartley added an empty-net goal with 1:17 left to seal the victory for the Shamrocks.
Devin Rustlie got the start for the Tauros, but was pulled in favor of Brian Cooke after 26:51. Rustlie finished with nine saves on 13 shots faced. Cookie surrendered two goals on 20 shots.
Saturday was more of the same, except the Shamrocks wasted no time slicing through Minot’s defense. They scored just 57 seconds into the contest while on the power play and would add three more before the end of the opening period.
Minot’s Dane Ramirez stopped the bleeding momentarily with his sixth goal of the season in the opening minute of the second period. The Shamrocks reclaimed the four-goal advantage with their second power-play goal of the game and added three more before the final whistle.
Zach Boren netted a hat trick and assisted on two others for a five-point night. Carter Sproule also finished with five points, scoring once and assisting on four more. The Shamrocks had 14 skaters register at least a point on Saturday.
The Tauros again had to use both of their goalies. Rustlie started for the second straight night but lasted just 11:03, allowing four goals on nine shots. Cooke finished out the final 48:57, stopping 14 of 18 shots.
The Shamrocks scored on three of their four power-play opportunities. The Tauros were 0-for-6 with the man advantage over the two games.
Minot travels to Minnesota to take on the Mallards for a weekend series beginning on Friday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m.
