Library drops Hoopla digital platform
Minot Public LIbrary has announced that starting Jan. 1, it will no longer be offering Hoopla, a digital media service that lends ebooks, audiobooks, music and other resources.
The library noted it will continue other digital services that provide thousands of ebooks and audio books, such as Libby/OverDrive, which operates on a more sustainable pricing model.
The library cited budget reasons for Hoopla’s discontinuation. The library pays a fee each time an item is borrowed, and often, the most popular items are at a higher price point. With an uptick in Hoopla’s popularity over the past couple of years, the costs have grown beyond what the budget can sustain, the library stated. The past 12 months have seen 22,756 check outs, a 32% increase in usage, bringing the average monthly cost to $3,200.
